Levelling up the robot scientist with multimodal skills In a chemistry laboratory, capping and decapping sample vials are fundamental tasks. Capping involves sealing sample vials using caps for the purposes of keeping the vial contents from interacting with the external environment. While decapping is the opposite, where the cap is removed instead.

Currently, these tasks are predominantly done manually or with specialised equipment. Equipping robots with the ability to perform these tasks would move us closer to deploying robotic scientists in labs. Yet, this is challenging due to the multi-modal nature of these tasks, where visual, tactile and contact sensory information are involved. This project presents an exciting opportunity to explore the integration of visual, tactile, and contact sensory modalities using machine learning and artificial intelligence to enable robots to cap and decap sample vials

About Us

The UCL EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Delivering Quantum Technologies aims to train the next generation of leaders in Quantum Technologies research. Our work brings together a team of over 40 academic experts from 5 university departments, including Physics and Astronomy, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the London Centre for Nanotechnology, and Chemistry.

Quantum technologies involve the control and manipulation of quantum states to achieve results not possible with classical matter; they promise a transformation of measurement, communication and computation. As breakthroughs in quantum technologies move out of the lab and into industrial applications, the highly skilled researchers who will be the future leaders in this field must be equipped to function in a complex research and engineering landscape where quantum physics meets cryptography, complexity and information theory, devices, materials, software, and hardware engineering.

Who Can Apply

These projects are suitable for undergraduate students studying Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, and Chemistry at a UK university.

The projects are especially beneficial to students who are considering postgraduate study and want to get a better understanding of what doing research in quantum technologies involves. No experience needed: we welcome your application if you have not done a research placement or research internship before.
