2. Collaboration

Learning through Collaboration occurs when two or more students try to make sense of a phenomenon together.  Collaborative learning is distinct from Learning through Acquisition as students learn from participation. It is different from learning through practice, as it is necessary to construct learners' knowledge through negotiation and participation with their peers and ensure they reach a shared understanding.

The educator's role

The educator's role in Collaborative learning usually includes:

  • Envision the lesson: create an image of the lesson, plan and organise student tasks.
  • Enable collaboration: arrange small groups or pairs so that one can learn from the other.
  • Encourage students: support learners and provide guidance during knowledge acquisition.
  • Ensure learning: monitor learning processes and check learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate achievement: choose suitable means to assess processes and products of learning.
