1. Acquisition

Learning through acquisition occurs when learners are listening to a lecture or podcast, reading from books or websites, and watching demos or videos.

Students need to learn what others have discovered in the field, observe experts' ways of thinking and performing, and appreciate what is already known in their field. This equips students to build on the work of pioneers in the field, doing so is the foundation of formal education.  When educators use "knowledge", "understanding", or "awareness" when defining learning outcomes, they are emphasising the importance of students acquiring sufficient understanding of pre-existing knowledge of the field.

Also, learning through acquisition is key to feeding students' curiosity in making sense of the world. However, it should be considered that relying solely on 'telling' the story of the field of study is not sufficient for learning to take place; hence the recommendation of implementing all of 6 learning types in the L&T approaches (where possible).
