External (Third Party) Tools

Recognised tools

Recognised means that:

  • staff aware of and might be using third party and/or freely (or at low cost) available technologies which have interesting uses for learning and teaching;
  • these are used at-risk, in the sense that software changes are out of the university's control;
  • no institutional day-to-day support is provided for these;
  • some basic advice and guidance may be available.

Included also in this category would be applications that are specific to a department or school which only that school/department has access to, which might include electronic materials from publishers, and for which support arrangements are made directly with the supplier.

Recognised tools typically include social media platforms, e.g. YouTube, Google tools and apps, Wikipedia, Wordpress, Twitter, Facebook; and, other niche third party tools, e.g. for creating infographics (Canva, Piktochart, visme) or animations (Powtoon (Links to an external site.)) or e.g. Padlet (Links to an external site.) - an online sticky note tool.
