Recording with Panopto Recorder Via Canvas - Using Microsoft Edge
The instructions below detail how to record using the browser based Panopto Capture in Microsoft Edge. If you would like to record using a different browser or a Mac, please see the following link. Links to an external site.
When recording a lecture via the web browser, please aim to allow at least 5 minutes at the end as the recording will need additional time to upload to Panopto.
- Open Microsoft Edge and log into Canvas. From within a Canvas course, select the Panopto Recordings Folder from the left-hand navigation bar and then click the + Create button.
- Select Panopto Capture (Record in browser)
3. Panopto Capture will then launch in a new browser tab
4. Next you will need to select an audio option, your browser may prompt you to select a device as shown below, select Allow

Each line in option connected to your computer will appear. Select the desired device and a checkmark will appear like in the example shown below
- Next select the Camera source. Again you may be prompted by your browser to give Panopto access to your camera(s). If you accidently block a device please see here Links to an external site. on how to unblock
- If you do not wish to have the web camera on, select the X button in the tool bar
- Next select your Screen and Application sources. To record a screen, application window or individual browser tab, select the monitor icon
- In Microsoft Edge you will be shown the following screen, select to record Entire Screen and then the screen you wish to record
If you wish to include the audio from your computer ensure that the “Also share system audio” option is selected as shown above. Then click Share and your screen will show in the Recording Window as shown below
- If you wish to change the quality of the recording select the cog (bottom right) and then Recording options, as shown below. Please be aware that the higher the quality of the recording the longer the upload may take at the end of a lecture
- If you wish to record a Powerpoint presentation as part of your Lecture, open the Powerpoint on the screen, this will then show in the Recorder Window
- To start the recording press the red record button and you will see the time incrementing at the bottom of the screen and the round red button will turn to a square one
Once you have completed the lecture press the square button again and you will then be shown the following screen
N.B. It is imperative that you ensure the following message “It’s safe to close your browser window” is shown (as seen below) before you shut this window down
You can now choose a Title for your Lecture recording and where you wish to save, by clicking the down arrow next to My Folder, a list all of the places you have access to record to in Panopto (e.g. your My Folder and Canvas courses). If a Course Folder is selected, the recording will show in the Panopto Recordings folder of the Course
Once the above message has shown and you have closed the recorder, you can now Log Off / Sign Out of the PC
